Can I try anything before calling out one of Top Shelf’s experienced technicians?
Before calling out a technician, here are some simple tasks you can check off the list before having us out to your home. If you don’t feel comfortable doing any of these tasks, please call us immediately and we will be happy to help.
You can:
- Check your filter and change it if needed. Filter longevity can vary greatly and can be tested if you have the right tools readily available. For you, I would stick to our motto for filters, “When in doubt, swap it out!” Filters are by far the cheapest and easiest component of your system that can help improve longevity and overall health of the system.
- Make sure all registers are open. Closing off registers can create a large backpressure, making the system work on overdrive. If your system isn’t operating correctly, start with opening all the registers and see if that helps.
- Double check that the cabinet door on furnace is secure. Over the years, manufacturers have experimented with different designs and configurations of furnace housings. This means they also manipulated the door shape and latching mechanisms. These can vary from metal to plastic, and different locking styles to try to maximize air sealing of the unit. Some designs are tricky to get to latch, especially after being in use for years. Try to ensure that the door is latched shut and the light is on inside on the board indicating that the furnace is ready for normal operation.
- Check the schedule on your thermostat. Some fancy thermostats have a mind of their own. A lot of user manuals can be found online, which can help guide you through the different interfaces. Without changing any installation settings, try resetting the schedule or override it so you can see if your system operates.
